Resource Spotlight: How to Approach Big Behaviors with Compassion
One of our counselors, Jessica Sieckman, offered a continuing education and community event centered on understanding behavior through a compassionate, brain-based lens, and provided this Behavior as Communication handout as a resource. Rooted in attachment and nervous system awareness, this framework emphasizes viewing children’s behaviors as meaningful communication rather than defiance. It offers practical strategies for responding to dysregulation, including prioritizing connection, co-regulation, and developmentally appropriate expectations. This resource serves as a helpful guide for both clinicians and caregivers, encouraging a shift from short-term compliance to long-term emotional growth and resilience, while reinforcing the importance of compassion for both children and the adults supporting them.
